Ms. Katherine tried to expand the girls' minds by not only teaching facts. In the excerpt from "Hard Times", the writer describes someone who does not think outside of the box. When it comes to are interpretation, this can be very hard. Katherine did not want them to only know facts, but wanted them to have their own views. She did not force them to think a certain way, but asked them to consider what she was saying. When the excerpt states that " nothing else will ever be of any service upon these children", I believe that Katherine would strongly disagree because of the progress that the girls made. By not sticking to facts and stern reasoning, she helped them understand things inside and outside of the classroom.
